Objective of the press – newspapers or magazines to sell copy

Pictures tell a 1,000 words

Good images help to sell copies

Photo desks or editors are looking for something:

Different, Quirky, Creative

The words "simple", "clean", "dramatic", and "appealing"

Relevant to the copy

That attracts attention to the story

Relevant to the readership – Farmers, Training, Education

The photographs need to stand out

the photographs also need to be composed to get maximum column usage. –

  • get up close – illustrate the main points of the story
  • use unusual viewpoints
  • think about wide angle or compressed images
  • think about lighting – particularly with product shots

Caption

Photographs should be accompanied with a caption – telling who is in the picture ( left to right) and a few words about the pic to put it into context

To ensure that your photograph can be used by print media, you need to supply a high-resolution photo that looks great when printed in a newspaper or magazine. Contact the photo desk and ask for their technical requirements

Portrait or Landscape – check the orientation

Don’t forget to ask permission particularly if the picture is to be sold

Avoid capturing brand names unless the story involves that product - copyright
